Boys Results:

On 4/22, the Knightmares traveled to Upper Daulphin in an attempt to improve their league record to 2-3 and increasing the chances of fullfilling their goal of finishing .500 on the season. The Knightmares proved themselves to be well prepared for this match. Keying on UD’s flyhalf and inside-center who have a reputation for hard running - were shut down by the Knightmare’s aggressive defense. All tackles were made at the gain line or in UDs backfield.

The Knightmares scored 1st w/ a penalty kick made by Nick “ I cant miss a conversion because I am that good” Raymond from 22 meters out. Score was 3-0. UD took advantage of the several offsides penalities the Knightmares were committing (due to the aggressiveness of the defense they were playing) and managed rumble in from 5 meters making the score 5-3.

The Knightmares regained possession and w/ steady composure and hard nose play marched the ball down to inside UDs 22.This is where approx 40mins out of the 60mins of the match was played. The Knightmares 2nd score came off a quick tap pently taken by Taylor “ I am determined not to knock the ball” Geenwalt who rummbled and stumbled into the try zone. Taylor had a great match in which he finally DIDN”T knock the ball on - ‘bout time!!

The Knightmares came out the 2nd and continued where they left off - tackling hard and maintaining possession. Our own resident Hippie  - Colin Rupp - got the ball rolling - taking the ball strong side - faking a kick (he got 3 UD defenders in the air) and running into the open space 20 meters. This fantastic fake/run staged our 2nd try, which came off a line-out in which Alex “Shmuckertash” Schmucker took the tap weak side, down the side-line dragging 3 UD defenders into  the try zone - unfortunately this hard effort would be called back by the line-judge (Big Mike) - in a controversial “Hey ref -I think he went out???” call.

Despite this set back - the boys maintained there composure and captured their 2nd victory of the season 8-5. As they say - the score doesn’t tell the whole story - the Knightmare’s dominated this match and are proving not only to others, but most importantly to themselves that they are a rugby team to be respected. Well done boys!!!!

B - side

The Knightmares agreed to play 7s due to the lack of numbers on both sides - the final score was 48-5 Knightmares. Scoring for the Knightmares were:
Sam “Only in my dreams” Gibson - 10 - (2tries)
Matt “Shins” Modderman  - 2/5 on conversions
Aaron “Bones” Burkhart - 15 (3 tries)- 1 w/ a pretty sumer-salt into the try zone
Brian “I can run all day” Fritz - 5 - (1 try)
Conor “the windmill” Daniels - 2/2 conversions and 5 (1 try)
Dan “Hands of Stone” Nguyen - 5 - (1 try)
Colin "The Hippie" Rupp -5 - (try) 1/1 on conversions

All and All it was a great day!!

Please come out to  Silver Springs on Friday 4/27 and support our boys as they take on CV  in their last match of the season and attempt to finish the yr @ .500

On Friday the 13th, The Knightmare’s squared off against there cross-town rivals, Warwick’s Swarm. Both teams entered the match w/ a winless record which only added to the pressure of the battle.

Both teams were well prepared and came out hard not giving an inch. The Swarm found success early hold the Knightmare’s deep in their own end - pushing them off the ball. However, the Knightmare’s maintained their composure and worked the ball down the back line - allowing Ian Dilley to break for several large gains in which he would eventually find the try zone at the end of his last 20 meter scramble. Nick “I cant miss a conversion because I am that good” Raymond missed the conversion having to attempt a kick into a very tough wind - making the score 5-0. The Knightmare’s would never lose the lead.

The Swarm did not give up w/out a fight, they managed to punch in 2 tries and missed both conversions. Joey “Chunk” Jacob's came on strong and “Truffle Shuffled” into the try zone 3 times - leaving his mark on the team he started his rugby career w/. Nick “I cant miss a conversion because I am that good” Raymond converted 2 of 4 on the day despite the windy conditions and difficult angles. At the end of the day the score was 24-10 - Knightmares.

This match was enjoyable - it was played and coached by people who love the game and the tradition - and it was just a classy evening for Lancaster Rugby. Well Done Everyone!!

Hempfield will go on the road 4/22 to take on Upper Daulphin.

HRFC v SC 3/29: A Side - Our boys traveled 2 1/2 hrs to SC on Thurs 3/29. The boys knew that they had much to prove after their poor performance against WS on 3/24. The boys improved their tackling and overall team play, but were unable to find an answer for SC’s fly half - who was able to exploit the backline w/ dummy passes and “looping” plays. The boys did a great job implementing one of their new offensive strikes - “The Juggernaut”.

In the end the boys lost 27 - 5. falling to 0-2 on the season. Scoring for the Knightmares was Tony “The Dentist” Ilaria. We would also like to extend our congrats to Tony, who shared w/ his coaches, teammates and fans on his future endeavors - he made it known that he will be pursuing a career in - Dentistry - that's right folks, our own Tony Ilaria wants to be a dentist - when asked why - he just smiled.

B Side - Our Killer B’s once again dominated the pitch winning their 2nd match of the season - 5-0. Scoring for the B’s was Colin Ruppert.

HRFC v Carlisle 4/1: A Side - On Sunday 4/1, our boys traveled to Carlisle in search of their 1st win of the season which Carlisle would adamantly deny them. Carlisle was coming off a sobering loss last yr dealt to them by the hands of Hempfield. Last yr, the Knightmares embarrassed Carlisle’s forwards winning every set piece and ruck. Carlisle knew they had to make some adjustments  to counter our boys hard rucking that they fell victim to last yr. That being said Carlisle committed 8-10 players every ruck and because we were slow getting ball out - were able to push us off the ball, getting turnover after turnover. Carlisle also played outstanding defense the entire match, holding our boys to only 1 try scored by Taylor Greenwalt - despite the fact that the Knightmares spent the better part of 55 mins attacking Carlisle's goal line - they were unable to punch it in.This in combination w/ numerous knocks and a variety of other penalties - thwarted every opportunity the Knightmare’s had afforded to them. Final score Carlisle 10 - HRFC - 5. The Knightmare’s also lost their valuable Fullback - Travis Reardon for the rest of the season - when he sprained/fractured his ankle in the closing seconds of the match while making yet another great open field tackle. Thanks Travis for your hard play, sorry to lose you for the season.

Our next match is against Warwick @ home - Silver Spring Park 4/13 @ 530pm. The coaches will be changing things up - we will not look the same when we hit the pitch on 4/13 - changes TBA. Come out and support our boys in their quest for their 1st win of the season - in what should be a great cross town match.

B Side - Our Killer B’s are now 3-0!!!!! They executed our game plan and redeemed our poor A Side showing. The boys have paid attention to details, have been able to capitalize on mistakes, take advantage of their strengths and maintain their composure. This equals wins folks. They won 10-7, scoring for the B’s were Tony “The Dentist” Ilaria and Ian Dilley. Nick missed both conversions from very difficult angles. Look for some of these B side standouts starting in our next match.

A side - On Saturday 3/24, the Knightmares were invited (and accepted) to play their 1st match of the season, against West Shore, during a  tournament hosted by F&M women. Despite, the weather and damp conditions both sides came out ready to play. The first 13 minutes of play was a test to both sides’ defense. The Knightmares stonewalled WS’s 1st attempts of scoring by playing some hard-nosed goal line defense. WS then returned the favor and defended their try zone successfully, when the Knightmares marched w/in 5 meters of it. The Knightmares threatened to be the first to put some points on the board w/ a penalty kick. Chris Boyd missed the mark, hitting the post.

After clearly being frustrated by the Knightmares offensive strike, WS raised their level of play and paved the way for what would develop into a “Knightmare” of an afternoon for our boys. In the next 22 minutes WS’s aggressive offense went unchallenged, allowing them to post 24 points on Hempfield’s - now suspect- defense. At half-time - the score was 24 - 0.

The Knightmares came out the 2nd half and managed to hold WS to only 1 try. The boys played better in the 2nd half - but found themselves tackling high, and out of position most of the 2nd half and were not able to capitalize on the few opportunities afforded to them by WS. At the end of the day the score was WS 31 - Knightmares O.

The coaches of this team know that this match - 1 match -  does not define our boys. Our boys are far more capable of playing good sound rugby than what they exhibited on Saturday. However, this is a defining moment for our boys - the question is - Will they rise to the occasion and debunk the claims questioning their ability to be competitive at this level of play? We will find out on:

Thurs. - @ State College - bus leaves @ 4pm - KO @ 7pm
Sun 4/1 - @ Carlisle - bus leaves @ 11am - KO @ 2pm
Friday 4/14 - @ home v. Warwick - KO @ 6pm (venue TBA stadium or springs)

B side - This match was about redemption for our boys. Our B side was made up of mostly “Iron Men” those players that had to play both A nd B side because of our poor numbers. Thanks boys. The Bee’s came out ready to play and took it to WS’s B side. Winning 28-12. Well Done!

4/2/06   The Hempfield Knightmare girls team played a tough Warwick B-side sunday April 2nd at Delco girl's field in Bryn Mawr. The Warwick Swarm played two matches the day before, defeating a Rochester Girls club who are a 3 time NY state girls champion. The Knightmare played inspiring rugby running in 7 tries by Madden, Murray, Burkhart (2), Gehman,Wolgemuth, and Mease. Natale converted 4 of 6 conversion attempts.

3/26/06  The Hempfield Knightmare Girls were defeated by an experienced North Bay, Md side 17-0.

3/12/06 The Hempfield Knightmare Girls Rugby Club performed well in a controlled scrimmage against a hard running Unionville II at Chadds Ford on Sunday the 12th. Scoring for Hempfield were Alexis Dimm (5), Emily Wolgemuth (5), Julia Hershey (5) and Ingrid Natale (2).

3/19/06   The Knightmares held off the Downingtown Girls side today at Silver Springs Park 12 - 0.   In the first half, only their stout defense kept Downingtown off the try line as the first half ended scoreless.  The second half  was a different story as fullback Heidi Burkhart took advantage of Hempfield's ball control and raced 50 meters for the first try.  Ingrid Natale made the conversion into a stiff breeze to put the score at 7 - 0.  Ten minutes later, again after Hempfield controlled the ball, srumhalf Emily Wolgemuth dove over for the final try.  This was the first league game and win for the HRFC girls side.  Way to go Knightmares!

Boys Results:

On 5/14 Hempfield co-hosted their 1st tournament with Warwick. The Amishland Ruggerfest was a great success. State College placed 1st, Warwick  placed 2nd and Hempfield placed 3rd out of 7 teams. Hempfield opened their day by playing Upper Dauphin. Even though the weather was not on the Knightmare's side the boys were relentless in their play and blanked UD 10 - 0. Scoring for Hempfield was Amos Keener (5) and Graham Heagy (5). Hempfield's next match was against 1st Seed -  Division 1 State College. State College had a first round bye and came out w/ fresh legs. Our boys matched State College's  intensity and played right back at them the entire match, but that would not be enough.  Due to some unlucky calls and the wear and tear of the day, Hempfield was dealt their 2nd loss of the season after a 5 game winning streak, 20-0. The score of this game did not matter. This game proved to the fans, the coaches and the boys how far they have come in 2 months since their last loss. The boys never lost focus and never gave up. They played with character, integrity and intensity the whole match and as coaches and fans of the sport - you could not ask for more. However this was not the end of our day - we had to face York (3rd time this season) to play for 3rd place. Both sides came out and played hard, but it was obvious that the boys on both sides were feeling the affects of the tournament. Both sides committed many costly penalties including 3 knocks by Hempfield in the try zone. However, Hempfield played with the same determination they played with all day and won the match off of a Brandon Dunn 30 meter sprint 5- 0.

I would also like to thank the following players for stepping up and playing on a side composed of Warwick and Hempfield players. This side made up the Lancaster KnightSwarm which was needed for a 7th team. The players are Damian Tearney, Arman Dzino. Will Blasdell, Ryan Gardill, Colin Rupp and Tim Scales.  This is one of the hardest things to do as a player and our boys showed a lot of class and team play by doing it and they deserve the recognition.  I would also like to thank Coach Pat Fisher for playing on this side as well. We were short 1 man and Coach Pat was happy to re-live his HS yrs by playing w/ our boys.

This was a great end to our season. Thanks again for everyone who made it a success, w/out all the support we had it would not have been possible. We hope to see everyone at our picnic at Silver Springs Park on Tues 5/16. Thanks- Coaches Frank, Gene and Pat

On 5/7 the Hempfield Knightmares beat Christiana 30-5, making hempfield the Divison III champs. It was a great day for Hempfield rugby, the boys played hard and once again their fittness and execution of fundamentals dominated the match. Scoring for Hempfield was Greg Rasmunson - 5, Brandon Dunn - 5, Ryan Gardill - 5, Joe Jacobs - 5, Matt Salimbeni - 5, Taylor Greenawalt - 5. All scores came were a result of unselfish team play. I do have to mention that there was another Chunk sighting when Joey "truffle schuffled" into the try zone on a 25 meter rumble.

We, the coaches, would like to take this time to first thank the Hempfield School District and the Soccer Club for their support in helping us make this great sport a part of their establishment. We also want to thank our boy's parents for their moral as well as their nurishing support through out the season- Thanks. Finally, I would like to thank my coaching staff  and our boys for making it happen - We did what we set out to do - win  the division. Well Done!!!

That being said, the season is not over. Hempfield will be co-hosting The Amishland Ruggerfest on 5/14 with the Warwick Swarm.  Our 1st match will be against Carlisle at 12pm in E. Pete. This will be a great experience for all participants and spectators. Please come out and support your local Rugby Team.

Cheers -Coaches Frank, Gene and Pat

PS- I would also like to thank Sunday's convoy for their support when I had to make a pit-stop...now that was team play - Thanks gang!!!!!!

Sunday 4/30 was a beautiful day for rugby. Hempfield faced a tough Carlisle A side in their last home match of the season. From the door, Hempfield had Carlisle playing back on their heels. Hempfield’s first score came off a loose ball picked up by Matt Moderman, who dove across the try line and touched it down for the score. Graham Heagy missed the mark making the score
5-0 Hempfield. Determined, Carlisle marched down the field and after 5 minutes of tough goal line defense by Hempfield, Carlisle crashed into the try zone making the score 5-5, missing their conversion. The 1st half ended deep in Carlisle’s 22, and Hempfield was awarded a penalty play. Scrum half, Matt Salimbeni, called a goal line play, handing the ball off to Taylor Greenwalt, who rumbled 10 meters, dragging several defensive players into the try zone
with him, touching the ball down for the go ahead try. Heagy hit the mark making the score 12-5, ending the first half of play.

Hempfield started the 2nd half where they left off in the 1st half, attacking- attacking-attacking. Carlisle unable to keep up, resorted to the kicking game, Hempfield would make Carlisle pay for this. About 30 mins into the 2nd half, Carlisle punted the ball deep into Hempfield’s  22. Graham Heagy received the ball and took it down the side line, blowing past Carlisle’s defense, for an 85 meter run for the try. The score was now 17-5 and Hempfield would go on to win the match.

This match came down to 2 things execution of fundamentals and superior fitness. Our boys were relentless the entire match and it paid off. The Knightmares have an overall record of  4-1 and are 4-0 in their division. Their next match is away against Christiana on 5/7. Tourney play starts 5/11. Please come out and support your local HS rugby team.
Thanks boys for a great day - Coaches Frank, Gene, and Pat

On 4/23 Hempfield squared off against their division rivals, the York Roses, in a barn burner of a match.  The first half of play can best be described as a war of attrition. Hempfield, as well as York, managed the ball well. Hempfield controlled the tempo of the game by getting to the break downs, winning their set pieces and maintaining possession of the ball, in which they put together several multi-phases of play, for the first time this season. This led to Hempfield
scoring first off the foot of Graham Heagy, converting a penalty kick for 3 points, taking the lead 3 - 0.  York determined not to let Hempfield run away with the match, gained possession of the ball, marched it down the field and with time winding down in the 1st half, converted their own penalty kick off a costly mistake by Hempfield, making the score 3 -3, ending the 1st
half of play.

The 2nd half started and looked much like the first half. YorK came out and after a costly Hempfield penalty, York had the chance to take the lead in the match. As the kicker for York approached the ball, Hempfield violated an EPRU law, which states that “during penalty kicks, the defense will remain motionless and silent”, and screamed at the approaching kicker. The kicker missed the conversion and as a result of the violation York was given 2nd chance and made good on it, taking the lead 6-3. It was at this point in the match that Hempfield, clearly
turned it up a notch and wanted this match. Their intensity was 2nd to none, they were rucking harder and winning all of their set pieces (defensively and offensively). With 3 mins left in the match it appeared that all of this hard work was to be in vain because  they squandered many scoring opportunities. Then opportunity came knocking on the door for Hempfield. York ran the ball out of bounds and it was a Hempfield line-out inside York's’ 22. In the line-out, Steve McDermott, received yet another great pass from Travis “Rudy” Houser. Hempfield then drove
York back, walking the ball into the try zone and was put down by Steve. Graham Heagy, finally hit a conversion from a difficult angle making the score 10-6 with Hempfield securing their 3rd win of the season. Their record is now 3-1. This was a great match and both sides played great rugby. Cheers to York and their coaching staff for a job well done.

We are home this weekend, 4/30,  for our last home match of the season against Carisle, please come out and support your team. Thanks  - Frank, Gene and Pat

On 4/10 Hempfield traveled to Harrisburg to square off against  Upper Daulphin. In the first 3 mins of the match UP came out strong and scored a try on the Knightmares, who were flat and looked like they were on the verge of having a repeat performance of last week. As the 1st half progressed, the Knightmares settled down and held UP to 5 points. The half ened UP - 5 Hempfield 0. The 2nd half was a different story. For the 1st time in 3 weeks the Knightnmares looked and played as a team. They ran in support of each other, they rucked hard and made some great tackles. The Knighhtmares 1st  try came off a 5 meter scrum. Greg Rasmunson, starting at 8 man, picked the ball up and took it strong side. After setting a platform, scrum half, Matt Salimbeni, issued a gut pass to Joey “Chunck” Jacobs and for the 2nd week in the row “truffle shuffled” his way into the try zone, making the score 5-5. Graham Heagy, missed the conversion from a very difficult angle. The Knightmares 2nd try also came off a scrum. After UP put the ball into play flanker, Damian Tearney, who earned his first start of the season, made a great tackle, picked up the loose ball and scrambled 30 yds. Steve McDermott, running in
support picked up the loose ball that Damien placed after being tackled and took it 35 meters for the score. Graham missed  the conversion from a very difficult angle. The Knightmares now took the lead and did not look back. The game ended with Graham hitting a penalty kick sealing the Knightmares 2nd victory of the season, 13-5.

Our boys won  this weekend  because they pulled together as a team. The boys exemplified what Knightmare Rugby is all about this weeknd - discipline, class and teamwork. Great work boys, you made us proud. Coaches Frank, Gene and Pat

“A” Side

On 4/2/06, the Knightmares squared off agianst the Delaware Military Academy in DE, in their first away match of the season. In the first half of play, despite their lack of aggression, the Knightmares held DE  to 12 points. Both DE scores came off of Knightmare errors deep in our own 22. In the 2nd half, Steve Mcdermott scored the Knightmaes lone try. He took the ball weak side off a scrum, and battled his way into the try zone. Taylor Greenawalt, who has been practicing his kick, missed the conversion from a very difficuly angle. To end the match, DE tacked on a penalty kick from another costly mistake made by the Knightmares.  However, the Knightmares continued this week controlling all of their line-outs and scrumages, but DE, in their 4th season, proved to be a very tough oppoent. DE was a very physical and experienced team which showed in their 15-5 victory over Hempfield. The Knightmares are now 1-1 in league play.

“B” Side

Our B-side boys came out vegence. They wanted to redeem themselves for their A-side erformance, and it showed. From  the door, their play was harder and more aggressive. DE’s B side put forth a great effort and managed to hold our boys to a 0-0 tie 20 mins. into the quarter. Then with 5 mins left, Joey “Chunk” Jacobs did his rendition of the”Truffle Shuffle”, breaking for a 45 meter shuffle to the try zone. Scoring the game winning try. The quarter/match ended Knightmares 5 - DE 0.

Our B side is now 2-0.

Boys we appreciate your effort - Thansk Coaches Frank,

3/26/06 The Hempfield Boys beat St. Puis 29 - 0 in their first divisional win on Sunday. The Knighmares came out strong and were relentless in their attack the entire match. The Knightmares scored twice off of solid line-outs, which they dominated, both sides of the
ball, the whole match. The forwards were able to ruck hard and control the tempo of the game which allowed our backs to showoff their speed and score twice off of multi-phase ball. The pack also managed to win all of their scrummages, including 5 steals. Scoring for the KNightmares were Brandon Dunn (15), Graham Heagy(9) and Logan Stark (5).

"B" Side - The Knightmare also won their first "B" - side match 7 - 0. Many of the players were playing different positions for the first time. After a slow start, our boys gained their composure the Knightmares dominated the game. The lone try was scored off of penalty play.  Our  scrum half, Dan Nguyen, hit Andy Becker for a gut pass in which he rubbled for 30 meters. Once in the
tackle, Beck made a great pass to winger, Ryan "Dill" Gardill, who took it in for the score. Justin hit the mark for the conversion.

Thank you boys for a job well done!!!
